Description
On January 1, every year the Florida Center for Creative Photography club members head out to photograph this Eagle pair, named Duke and Duchess. The pair nest annually near the Gulf of Mexico in Pasco, County, Florida, along the recently paved Coastal Anclote Trail. This multi-purpose trail offers tree-framed pathways, waterfront views and a glimpses of greenery and wildlife. The trail winds through 4.5 miles, interconnecting three Pasco County Parks: Anclote River Park, Anclote Gulf Park and Key Vista Nature Park. The eagles' nest, which predates the trail, is easily visible from the trail. Bald eagle nesting habitats are protected by law, but little or no emphasis has yet been placed on the preservation of roosting or foraging habitats, such as exists in these parks. The greatest numbers of bald eagle nesting territories in Florida are found along the Gulf coast and around some of the larger inland lakes and river systems in the Florida peninsula. Florida has one of the densest concentrations of nesting bald eagles in the lower 48 states, with an estimated 1,500 nesting pairs. The Florida Wildlife Commission has monitored the population of nesting bald eagles in Florida since 1972. The bald eagle was removed from the USFWS endangered species list and the FWC imperiled species list in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The bald eagle continues to be protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, along with the state bald eagle rule (68A-16.002, F.A.C.).
