Description
The hike around the Catacachi Cayapas caldera hike with REI, was quite strenuous as it was nine miles. It was well worth it as the view always changed. This is a photo of the wide caldera and crater lake at the foot of Cotacachi Volcano in the Cordillera Occidental of the Ecuadorian Andes. The caldera was created by a massive eruption about 3100 years ago that generated about 5 cubic kilos of pyroclastic flow and covered the surrounding area in volcanic ash up to 8 inches deep. The volcano has been dormant since that time, according to Wikipedia.
